How to Improve AEO Readiness Using Content Gap and Citability Data

AEO God Mode gives you two complementary tools for improving your content: the Content Gap Scanner (which finds structural issues) and the Citability Score (which predicts AI citation likelihood). This guide shows how to use both together for maximum impact.

AEO God Mode gives you two complementary tools for improving your content: the Content Gap Scanner (which finds structural issues) and the Citability Score (which predicts AI citation likelihood). This guide shows how to use both together for maximum impact.

The Two Tools

Content Gap Scanner (Free)

  • Finds structural problems: missing schema, thin content, no meta description, missing images
  • Provides automated fixes for some issues
  • Located at AEO God Mode > Content Gaps (admin.php?page=aeo-god-mode#/content-gaps)

Citability Score (Pro)

  • Predicts citation likelihood based on 10 content signals
  • Provides improvement tips per page
  • Located at AEO God Mode > Citability (admin.php?page=aeo-god-mode#/citability)

Recommended Workflow

Step 1: Run the Content Gap Scanner First

The gap scanner catches the basics. Fix structural issues before optimizing for citability.

  • Go to Content Gaps and click Scan
  • Sort by gap score (highest first)
  • Fix auto-fixable issues first:

Missing meta descriptions (auto-generated from content)

FAQ opportunities (auto-applies detected FAQ schema)

  • Then handle manual fixes:

– Expand thin content to 300+ words minimum

– Add internal links (at least 2 per post)

– Add alt text to images

– Set featured images

Step 2: Run the Citability Score

After structural issues are fixed, optimize for AI citation signals.

  • Go to Citability and click Score All Posts
  • Click on any page with a C, D, or F grade to see improvement tips
  • Work through tips in order of signal weight:

Start with the highest-weight signals (15 pts each):

  • Direct Answer: Add a clear, concise answer within the first 2 sentences after your first H2. This is what AI engines extract as the primary citation
  • Original Data: Include specific numbers, percentages, and statistics. “73% of marketers use AEO” is worth points; “many marketers use AEO” is not

Then mid-weight signals (10 pts each):

  • Author Attribution: Each author needs a display name and bio. Fill in author profiles at AEO God Mode > E-E-A-T
  • Definitive Claims: Replace hedging language. “AEO is the practice of optimizing for AI” scores. “AEO might be considered a practice” does not
  • Question Headings: Use H2s phrased as questions: “What is AEO?” not just “AEO Overview”
  • Source Links: Link to authoritative external sources. 2-3 outbound links minimum
  • Content Depth: Aim for 1,500+ words on important pages

Step 3: Verify Progress

After making improvements:

  • Re-run the Content Gap Scanner to confirm structural fixes
  • Re-run the Citability Score to see updated grades
  • Check the Citation Tracker (if Pro) to see if AI engines start citing your improved pages

Step 4: Monitor Over Time

The Citation Tracker runs automatically twice daily. Over time, you should see:

  • Gap scores decreasing (fewer structural issues)
  • Citability grades improving (better content signals)
  • Citation hit rate increasing (more AI mentions)

Connecting the Signals

Here’s how different AEO God Mode features work together:

Action Content Gap Effect Citability Effect Citation Effect
Add FAQ schema Resolves `faq_opportunity` gap +5 pts (faq_structure) AI engines prefer structured FAQ content
Write author bio N/A +10 pts (author_attribution) Builds E-E-A-T trust
Add meta description Resolves `no_meta_description` gap N/A Better context for AI crawlers
Expand thin content Resolves `thin_content` gap +10 pts (content_depth at 1500+) More material for AI to cite
Add outbound links Resolves `no_external_links` gap +10 pts (source_links) Trust signals for AI
Add internal links Resolves `no_internal_links` gap N/A Helps AI discover related content
Apply Article schema Resolves `no_schema` gap +5 pts (schema_present) Structured data helps AI understand content

Prioritization

If time is limited, focus on these high-impact actions first:

  • Fix missing meta descriptions (free, auto-fixable, affects crawl context)
  • Add direct answers after H2 headings (15 pts citability, highest weight)
  • Include statistics and data (15 pts citability)
  • Set up author profiles (10 pts citability, affects every page by that author)
  • Apply FAQ schema (resolves gap + 5 pts citability)
